Since its inception on the campus of The University of Florida on May 17, 1975, the Iota Lambda Chapter has remained devoted to the noble purpose, and ideals that serve as the foundation of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. The purpose of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority is to cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards, to promote unity and friendship among college women, to study and help alleviate problems concerning girls and women in order to improve their social stature, to maintain a progressive interest in college life, and to be of service to all mankind. After its incorporation as an everlasting body on January 29, 1913, our sorority has become the instrument through which, determined college-trained women have set to uphold and encourage the purpose and traditions of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. Led by our visionary, Ethel Hedgemon Lyle, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority was founded on the campus of Howard University – located in Washington, DC – by our Twenty Pearls. On January 15, 1908, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority became the first Greek-lettered organization established in the United States by Black women, for Black women. Recently, AKA has hosted a school supply drive for Matthews Elementary School and a cleanup project at Emma Gaskin Magnolia Park with the Greenwood Recreation Department and Carnation Garden Club.
